Why Call Of Duty Went Back To World War Two

As you no doubt know, here at Mods “R” Us, we have really fallen in love with Sledgehammer Games latest offering in the COD franchise, Call Of Duty WWII. Not only have we had a great time with the game, but sales figures and critical response has been far greater than what Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare achieved this time last year.

While we love playing the game, we have also really enjoyed finding more out about it and recently during the Call Of Duty World League Event, one of the co-founders of Sledgehammer Games, Michael Condry offered some insight as to why for this game, Call Of Duty went back to WWII.

Surprisingly it was not because people were getting sick of the “futuristic” Call Of Duty games like so many people seem to think. We can say this as Call Of Duty WWII has been in development for around three years, so before the whole jet packs and wall running thing started to get a bit old in the Call Of Duty franchise. The actual reason that they went back to WWII for Call Of Duty WWII was all about the story. They felt that this time period offered real tales of heroism and tragedy and wanted to tell a story that had both of those things. Plus there had not been what they felt was a really great game based on World War II in quite some time.

It is easy to point and say that Activision made Sledgehammer go back to WWII because of the disappointing sales and reception of Infinite Warfare. But Call Of Duty WWII was long in development before that happened, so we take Sledgehammer at their word when they say the decision was all about creating and engaging story. We think that Call Of Duty WWII is one of the best games in the series in years and love to hear the story behind how it came to be.
